About Us

We are a group of friends approaching our 40s, all well-established in our respective careers, who decided to join forces and embark on an intriguing project together. Ben and Brenton, senior developers at highly respected companies, bring with them a wealth of experience in software development. Joe likes playing videos games and watching twitch.

With over twenty years of friendship under our belt, we've now reached the stage in life filled with family commitments and less leisure time. In this new phase of life, we wanted an excuse to hang out make cool stuff. Thus, we formed bored canvas. It allows us to collaborate, hang out, and develop some exciting projects. Our inaugural venture is Stream Wars.

The Project_

Seeing the organized chaos of Reddit Place got us thinking - can we make games for massive crowds? Tens of thousands of people at once? What would that look like? Is that even a good idea? Well, we want to find out! We're in the middle of crafting a system and exploring game mechanics that can handle that level of player base.

Game mechanics that might work in a regular mass multiplayer game be it an mmo or a battle royale do not work at that scale. What we learnt from watching reddit place was that we wanted the game to play more as a Hive, with the majority having simple actions that serve the group.

The game we are developing, Streamwars, is built around this concept. It is a simple king of the hill game, streamers own a flag tile and their audience clicks the surrounding tiles to expand their territory. If they control the crown tile at the end of the event they win.

Phase 1 - Technial Test

13th February 2023

With the help of Mizkif, Emiru, wakewilder and YUNGJEFF we were able to run a test of our system with over 1000 simultanous players. Despite one overpopulated team and a few bugs we learnt a lot from this test, most importantly the core idea was feasible and just required refinement.

Phase 2 - Game Test

TBD

We have reskinned it, added effects, refined the user onboarding process, completely rebuilt both the game and web servers based on the data we collected from Phase 1 and much more. All of this is almost ready to go, and we will be organising a test again very soon.

Future Phases

We have big plans. We want to add a creative element where streamers can assign tiles to members of their audience for decoration. This will not only foster an environment for community building but will also add an element of friendly competition as communities vie against each other. We also have plans for other games running on the same engine, and even opening up development to other parties to make their own games on our engine.
